L.L.Zamenhof was the person who invented Esperanto language. There are two places which remind of Zamenhof - the statue in the city park and the monument in the place where once his house was standing (it is at the end of the Zamenhof street, close to the forest).

Will the cultural heritage be upheld in Lithuania?
Wooden architecture prevailed in Lithuania up to the second half of the 20th century. Architecture created by peasants has been studied in detail and is presented in national country life museums, while architecturally unique manors have been almost unstudied. In the 18th century even 4 thousand manors were calculated in Lithuania. And, despite the existence of international documents that describe strategies of valuation and protection of wooden heritage, the further devastation is still continuing in Lithuania. The manors unmercifully disappear from our life. Looking to the capital, small Lithuanian towns are tending to supersede their wooden heritage, too: every of them rush to become more moderns, although it is well known that we may astonish Europe only by our originality but not by imitating it. There are seven historic – urban town centres in Alytus county that are inscribed in the Register of Cultural Property. They are the following: Veisiejai, Daugai, Simnas, Butrimonys, Valkininkai, Merkinė and historic part of Druskininkai town. Tendency to neglect the requirements of heritage protection in the name of private needs is frequent in Lithuania. Unfortunately, the analogue urban – architectural heritage has not been preserved in Palanga and Kursiu Nerija. It is a paradox that our lawful country cannot cope with wilful damage of cultural heritage and there is a real thread of its survival.

Dzūkija
Kiek daug gražių dainų,
Bet gražiausios mano tėviškėj.
Su daina aš gyvenu:
Koks gi tu dzūkas be dainos?
Vieškelio vingiuos supas berželiai,
Šypsosi saulė danguje.
Mes esam dzūkai, girių karaliai.
O karalienė -Dzūkija.
Kiek daug žalių girių,
Bet žaliausios mano tėviškėj.
Girios oš, girios žaliuos,
Kur aš gyvenčiau, jei ne jos.
Kiek gaug gerų žmonių,
Bet geriausi mano tėviškėj.
Dzūkas paguos, ranką paduos,
Dzūkas tau širdį atiduos.
